People Who Can't Imagine Losing

People Who Can't Imagine Losing
I watched a good documentary about Hitler's 1936 Olympics the other night. It said that Hitler wanted to build a much larger stadium for the event, one that could hold over 400,000 spectators. His architect informed him that such a structure would force a change in the track size that would break international rules. But Hitler said that Germany would soon be in a position to write or rewrite such rules. He said more or less the same thing about invading Poland, that 'history would be written by the conquerers.' He counted very heavily on winning. Most scoundrels do. And then what happened when he lost?

It was with great confidence that he sent his executioners into the occupied territories to conduct his final solution. He couldn't imagine losing. Then he denied his generals permission to withdraw when they were being surrounded by superior Russian forces. He couldn't imagine losing. He forced his advisors to report on an increasingly dire situation in a positive fashion, rendering the information all but useless. Just couldn't imagine losing. Didn't want to face the prospect even for a second. Are you following me?

People who can't imagine losing are unfit for power. They are too out of touch with the common citizen. People who can't imagine losing love their power too much. People who want power are perhaps the last ones who should have it. If they looked at being a leader as demanding a heavy personal sacrifice from them in order to put their people's needs first, they wouldn't be so eager to grab power and so determined to hold onto it. Lastly, people who can't imagine losing may rack up the most horrible secrets during their terms of power, since they fear no consequences for their actions.

I just had a look at one of the news reports about the U.S. election results on YouTube. The comments underneath it were outrageous. If that's what YouTube comments look like, I'm glad I don't see them on my posts.
